Odilon Redon was born in Beaux, France in 20th of April 1840. Has name from his mother name Odile. He started drawing in age of 15, however his father wants him to be an architect. Odeon failed his exams to study architecture in Paris' Ecole des Beaux Arts, and started study sculpture.

Paris' Ecole des Beaux Arts, National school of fine arts where many generations of famous artist and architects studied architecture and painting. Famous names such as: Degas, Delacroix, Renoir, Sisley. Redon tried three times to pass the exams.

Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904) friend of Redon, painter and sculptor who used a style known as Academicism and Orientalism. He does many sketches and photographs during travels and painted from them. Odilion Redon "Guardian spirit of the Waters" 1878

Redon, in age of 38, gained recognition from his work  "Guardian Spirit of the Waters", when in 1884 novel writer  Joris-Karl Huysmans described Redon's picture in his novel "Against Nature".
Redone drew this picture on cream wove paper, used various charcoals, black chalk and white chalk to define lights. His work was quite dark and throughout most of his career he didn’t use colour at all. His first collection of works was called “Noirs”, set of charcoal drawings. The darkness in his work probably came from Odilion's childhood when he felt lonely, suffered from anxiety and depression.

Odilion Redon "Crying spider", 1881

The "Crying Spider" black chalk coal and eraser. Redon drew a nine legs spider with a human face. Created a strange monster which is full of symbolism. We could asked " why the spider is crying?" "why that picture is so dark and sad and what the spider is looking at?" Dark spider body looks like a black plate where Redon put the human head.

Odilion Redon "Head of  Martyr" 1877

"Head of Martyr" on this picture Redon used symbolism and again put the human head on the plate. Picture is dark, only whiteness of the bold head is standing out against the blackness. The face is sad with the eyes closed. Eye, nose and lips are drawn in details, however the artist missed the ear.
