Skill week - life drawing part two

The second day of drawing.Warm up exercise was quite difficult as it was only 2 min long and I used the fine line pen, I tried to avoid drawing , how does Sam said - the“chicken legs” (many short lines) I looked at the model body, shape, curves and lines and I draw firm, black outlines trying to keep the pen on the paper. We repeated those exercise few times and we tried blind drawing which was even more difficult. However the main point was to warm up the hand, not to draw the perfect picture

This time I had little bit more time. I started by looking at his arms position and where to start drawing, consider the chair and his feet. The left arm and the line of his back I draw first, then I concentrated on his legs and position on the chair. Awareness of time going wasn’t helpful, moreover using the black pen was difficult as its shows every single mistake. I love using fine liners pen when I am drawing cartoon characters, this was something new for me. I swapped pen for more thicker 0.8 to define the shades. It started looking quite well when the time stoped and we switched the model.

When the woman sat on the chair, I almost stopped breathing. She chose the most difficult position for me to draw. I don’t know why but I am struggling drawing figures or characters facing right side, same as I am struggling to draw straight lines and using rulers. I tried to stay focus on her body and treat it as a geometric shapes which was very helpful. I started with thin 0.2 pen and during drawing I have changed it twice for 0.5 and 0.8 at the end to define shades.
This is my favourite picture because for the very first time I define shade by using lines (not cross hatching  technique) and I drew someone facing right. shading on the leg is little bit messy because I started wrong with the straight lines, then Sam told me to curve the lines little bit as this is her leg and I need to consider natural body shapes too. I am super happy with the results. I wish to have more time to finish drawing.

My enthusiasm disappeared quickly when I realised how difficult is painting with ink. I remembered from the monochrome lesson how I struggled to paint the bag and the landscape. This time I made the same mistake by using dark tones first instead of light ones and slowly building up the shapes.

  1. The second session really demonstrated how much you had grown in confidence in terms of drawing and structuring the figure. Good effort, well done.
