William Morris research

 William Morris (1834-1896 ) person of multiple talents, he was a craftsman, early socialist , poet, designer who  designs fabrics, stained glass, furniture, wallpaper and so on. 

Morris was born in Essex in a large family. He studied at Marlborough College, however he state that: " at Marlborough he learned next to nothing...for indeed index next to nothing was taught" (Morris, W. ) Later on he went to Exeter Collage at University of Oxford were he met his lifelong friend Burne-Jones. Morris finished study in 1856 and at the same year he financed  a year issues of The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine where he published his own poem.

Morris's love of medieval art confirms stronger after his visit to Belgium and Northern France where he saw Hans Memling and Hubert Van Eyck paintings. Dante Gabriel Rosetti had also a  strong influence on William Morris persuaded him to give up architecture for painting. He introduced Morris to his artist friends who were decorating the walls of the Oxford Union. Morris and his friends Burne-Jones and Webb got commission to decorate the new church -St. Martin’s-on-the-Hill at Scarborough. William Morris and Web painted the ceiling when Burne-Jones made magnificent sainted-glass windows. Morris also color the windows and put the lead lines. He started designing wallpapers in between 1862-1864 when he made "Fruit", "Trellis", "Daisy" and the "Pomegranate" but his own style developed 10 years later when he created the "Jasmine" and "Marigold".

In 1895 Morris started to experiments with vegetable dyes which resulted with his best woven fabrics, carpets and tapestries. He used carved pear woodblocks to print his wallpapers, which were  filled with natural, mineral-based dyes and press to the fabric with foot operated weight. The woodblocks creates repetitive, precise pattern on the fabric. Morris stated that: “Remember that a pattern is either right or wrong. It cannot be forgiven for blundering, as a picture may be which has otherwise great qualities in it. It is with a pattern as with a fortress, it is no stronger than its weakest point.”
