Development Exercise
This development exercise I started with a good choice of inspirational music. I was listening The Clash looking for inspirations in newspapers ,scrap papers, and staring on the blank piece of paper. My project is related to the punk subculture so I tried to think as a Punk...
I found an advert with lots of grey space on the background, which reminds me a grey, boring buildings in Poland .I wrote words "Punk's not dead!" with a black ink. This is how they "mark the territory" by writing slogans on the walls. It is a vandalism, however if you are Punk, you don't really care.
Next I found a beautiful advert with flowery shaped chocolates for Mother's Day. I don't know how to explain that but it was to cute and to pretty to stay like this. So I changed it a little bit. This time I drew a symbol of anarchy. Vandalism again, and also revolt against imposed rules.
I really enjoyed that exercise and I found lots of opportunities in an ordinary newspaper. Next advertise was about buying a new house , the "No Future!" slogan fits perfectly in here. Punk subculture is about rebelling against everything. Against the future, against the rules, against the parents etc. No one was planning buying house. Real punk lives in the squats.
I used a black ink again, which is perfect because the effect reminds me graffiti and something written illegally in hurry, on the building. I also love the uneven lines and ink stains
In this ink stains and splashes I noticed something beautiful, the picture which was started already. I grabbed the black marker and I just finished it off.
This was a really well done development exercise. You have approached this from two directions, both as someone thinking about tattoo development and through the eyes of a punk! These are thoughtful ideas and need a follow up! Perhaps you could think about how or if colour could play a role in exercises like this and I would like to hear about how this has helped to develop your project idea and outcomes.
