Life Drawing Exercise

Today I have another opportunity to do life drawing nudes. This time I worked with charcoal which never was my favourite medium, however I am starting to change my mind as I learned how to use it. At the beginning of the session we had a little warm up and Sam explained how to work with charcoal. Firstly I focused only on the shades on the model's body and I didn't drew any black heavy outlines, which was different from my previous attempts in drawing with charcoal. I also didn't drew any details like face features or fingers

Second exercise was similar and I tried to work faster to be able to drew as many details as I could. I crushed the piece of charcoal on the paper and I only used my finger to define the shades and figure. This time I quickly drew the floor by putting the piece of charcoal flat on the paper, which gave me nice dark structure different from the model's body

I took more time on the third picture and I used the same technique by drawing with fingers. I also used the dough rubber for the lights and I really like the results

Last exercise was my favourite. I like the results and drawing on coloured paper makes a big difference. I used white chalk and rubber to define the light
I love looking at the drawings from the distance, it looks much better and I can also notice some mistakes.
Only if I had more time to work on this picture.

  1. With regard to the last picture, you could try this over a longer pose in the next session when we do two poses over the whole session. You will have 45+ minutes to work on each drawing and you could use this approach with sugar paper and charcoal and chalk. You got a really nice result here.

On another matter, I think now is about the time to see some firmer evidence of your work on your outcomes and your tattoo design and perhaps some thought on how you are going to combine the Punk aesthetic with the tattoo aesthetic.

I think it is worth looking at Punk and it's influence on Graphic Design (we talked about Sniffin Glue earlier in the term) but the Sex Pistols 'Never Mind the Bollocks' LP cover design has had many imitators to this day. Perhpas you could look at the legacy of Punk graphic design and its influence.
