Sailor Jerry and Punk Rock

In 2013 Paul Simonon the bassist for The Clash started collaboration with Sailor Jerry. Simonon designed and created four limited edition pieces - a leather jackets (only 50 ) for $2,300 two t-shirts ($50) and a bandana ($30) .

The collection was called The Flash Collection. Simonon combined his punk art roots with Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins’ inimitable flash art to create a truly legendary capsule collection.

"It's an individual thing, really — a leather jacket and what you put on it. Anyway, there's only fifty. So wherever they are, I can tell 'em what to do if they need help." Simonon P. (2011)

In 2014 Iggy Pop design the second line for The Flash Collection. Second Sailor Jerry's collaboration with the Iggy Pop is just further evidence that punk rock and tattoos work so well hand-in-hand.

Iggy’s line includes a vest, belt with custom belt buckle, and select patches all derived from the late, great Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins’ famous tattoo flash designs.

Blue-black 50’s style denim vest is decorate with an iconic Sailor Jerry anchor and with the phrase ‘Death Shall Triumph,’ (an expression found in several Sailor Jerry flash designs).
Each vest comes with a pack of 6 patches, chosen from Iggy Pop’s favourite flash designs.
Set of patches allowing people to customize their vests.
"The other item in the collection is a leather belt hand-tooled by brothers Michael and David Stampler of the Norman Porter Workshop in Philadelphia and boasting a hand-cast brass buckle made by an artisan company based in Washington."
The buckle is cast with a Sailor Jerry image of a shark rising from the sea, which Pop regards as a symbol of ‘power and individuality.’

  1. Interesting post, I was unaware that Simonon had collaborated with Sailor Jerry. As an 'extra' element (if there is time) what about a series of mockups of your tattoo designs as a limited edition of patches to attach/sew onto clothing?
